What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is the reduction of stress, anxiety, irritability or agitation during dental procedures, that is achieved through the administration of sedative medication. The premise of sedation dentistry is to calm the patient by alleviating stress, anxiety, and to induce a relaxed state of consciousness during dental procedures.
What sedation types are available at Wildwood Dental Clinic?
Wildwood offers oral sedatives to our patients – these are taken in the form of a pill or tablet and are typically taken an hour or so before your appointment to allow time for the sedative effects of the medication to activate. Depending on the dosage of medication administered, patients are conscious throughout the duration of the medication and can experience low to moderate levels of sedative effects.
Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is available as a sedation option to help patients quickly feel relaxed and calm during a dental procedure. This method is administered through a gas mask placed over the nose and mouth where patients inhale a mixture of nitrous oxide gas combined with oxygen to achieve its sedative effects.
How safe is sedation dentistry?
It’s important to share your medical history with your dentist prior to the procedure to determine if sedation dentistry is appropriate for you. In most instances, sedation dentistry is generally considered safe, effective and quickly reversible, but there are always risks involved in anesthesia.
