Dental Bridges

Replace missing teeth with a dental bridge at our dental office in Saskatoon!

If you have a missing tooth, a dental bridge can help “bridge” the gap and remedy issues caused by missing teeth such as the prevention of shifting of the surrounding teeth which can lead to decay and bite issues. Replacing missing teeth with a dental bridge can also help resolve chewing difficulties and, of course, restore the appearance of your smile.

Types of dental bridges

A traditional dental bridge consists of crowning the teeth on either side of the missing tooth and placing a false tooth between these two crowns to replace the missing tooth. This is the most common type of bridge and it can replace one or more missing teeth. Common materials used to make these bridges are gold, combination of gold and ceramic, and sometimes all ceramic material.

Cantilever dental bridges are similar to traditional bridges, however the pontic is only supported with a crown on one side of the gap, rather than both sides like a traditional bridge.

Maryland dental bridges are held in place by a metal or porcelain frame that is bonded to the back teeth adjacent to the gap. This type of bridge conserves the tooth structure of the teeth but it is less strong than a traditional bridge.

What does a dental bridge procedure entail?

Your dentist will begin by ensuring that your teeth are plaque and tartar-free before starting with the procedure. If you are due for a professional teeth cleaning, we will schedule you in for a visit with our hygienist before your bridge procedure.

At your first visit, your dentist will carefully prepare the teeth on either side of the space and then take a mold impression of this area and send it off to a dental lab for your dental bridge to be fabricated. While your bridge is being fabricated, we will fit you with a temporary bridge. Be sure to take good care of your temporary bridge and try to avoid chewing hard or sticky food on that side of your mouth until your permanent bridge is placed. Once the permanent bridge is ready, your dentist will have you visit us for a follow-up appointment to have it placed and fit for comfort.

Dental bridges can be an excellent solution for missing teeth. If you have any questions about the procedure, contact our dental office in Saskatoon by calling (306) 374-7272 or click here to schedule an appointment.
