What are tooth-coloured fillings?
Tooth-coloured fillings, also called composite resin fillings, are used to repair teeth affected by cavities, minor cracks, or surface chips. The composite material is a blend of plastic resin and fine glass particles that can be precisely shade-matched to blend with your surrounding tooth structure.
Unlike traditional silver amalgam fillings, composite fillings bond directly to the tooth. This allows your dentist to remove only the decayed or damaged portion, preserving more of the healthy tooth structure. The result is a restoration that functions well and is far less visible than metal alternatives.
The filling procedure
A composite filling is typically completed in a single appointment. Here is what to expect:

The area around the tooth is numbed so you remain comfortable throughout the procedure.

The decayed or damaged portion of the tooth is carefully removed, leaving healthy tooth structure intact.

Surface preparation
The tooth surface is cleaned and lightly etched to help the composite material bond securely.

Once the filling is shaped to match your bite, it is smoothed and polished for a comfortable, natural feel.
How long do fillings last?
With good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups, composite fillings typically last many years. Longevity depends on factors like the size and location of the filling, your bite, and how well you care for your teeth at home.
Larger fillings or those placed in teeth subject to heavy chewing forces, such as back molars, may wear sooner and could eventually need replacement or upgrading to a different type of restoration. Your dentist will monitor your fillings at each checkup.
Signs you may need a filling
Some cavities cause no symptoms in their early stages, which is why regular checkups and X-rays are important for catching decay before it progresses. Common signs that a filling may be needed include:
