For treatment at home, you administer the whitening gel and trays independently – this treatment runs over the course of two to four weeks. Meanwhile, the in-office Zoom! Whitening System can be completed within one hour and will be administered by our dentists under professional supervision. The in-office teeth whitening treatment will often be combined with 3-7 days of take-home treatment, but this requirement varies for each patient. The results for in-office whitening and take-home whitening can bring you an average of up to eight shades lighter; however, results will vary for each patient based on the current state of your teeth, and the level of staining.
Teeth bleaching treatment is the most effective when your mouth is clean, therefore if you have not been in to visit us for your regular dental hygiene appointment, your dentist may recommend booking you in for a session before we commence the whitening treatment.
In-office teeth whitening
For the in-office bleaching treatment, your gums and lips will be isolated from your teeth prior to the application of the whitening gel. The gel is stronger than any solution you can get over the counter at the drug store, so proper isolation by our professional team is necessary. The solution will be applied to your teeth in 15-minute intervals and repeated four times. An LED light will be used to increase activation of the whitening gel to make the process more effective. Once complete, whitening trays will be made so you can continue the whitening process for 3-7 days after you have completed the in-office process of your treatment.
At-home teeth whitening
For the take-home treatment, whitening trays will be custom made for you to wear at home. We find that our patients choose to wear them for a half hour before bed, overnight while they sleep, or in the morning for a half hour before they start their day. Different concentrations of the solution will be given to you depending on how you choose to proceed with your whitening.
It’s recommended to avoid dark and highly pigmented foods and fluids for 2-3 days after you stop using the whitening solution. Try sipping darker beverages through a straw or just drinking water, and choose foods light in colour.
