What to Expect at Your First Visit
Your first appointment at Wildwood is typically longer than a routine recall. We take time to establish baseline records and get to know your oral health history from the start.
What to bring
Bringing the right information to your first appointment helps us provide more complete and personalized care.
Health history information
A list of your current medications, any known allergies (including medication allergies), and any health conditions or diagnoses you're aware of. This information directly affects the care we provide.
Dental insurance card
If you have dental insurance, bring your plan card and your member or certificate number. We direct bill most major plans.
Recent dental x-rays
If you've had dental x-rays taken elsewhere within the past year or two, you can request copies from your previous dental office to bring along. This may help us avoid duplicating them unnecessarily.
Photo ID
A piece of photo identification is helpful for our records.
How your first visit works
- 1
Arrive a few minutes early
For your first visit, plan to arrive 10 minutes before your appointment time. This gives you a few minutes to settle in and complete any remaining paperwork at the front desk.
- 2
Health history review
We'll review your health history with you, including your current medications, any known allergies, and any systemic health conditions. This information is important because it affects how we plan your dental care. All information is kept private and confidential in accordance with applicable privacy legislation.
- 3
Baseline x-rays
If you don't have recent dental x-rays from another provider, we'll take a full set. X-rays allow us to see between teeth, below the gumline, and in areas that can't be assessed visually. They form part of your baseline record and are an important diagnostic tool.
- 4
Comprehensive clinical exam
Your dentist will complete a thorough exam of your teeth, gums, bite, jaw, and oral tissues. This includes an oral cancer screening. The dentist will review your x-rays alongside the clinical exam findings.
- 5
Cleaning, if time and treatment planning allow
Depending on what's found during your exam and how much time has been scheduled, a professional cleaning may be completed at this appointment. In some cases, particularly if there are findings that need to be discussed first, your dentist may recommend scheduling the cleaning separately.
- 6
Treatment planning discussion
If the exam reveals any concerns, your dentist will explain what was found, what the options are, the relative urgency, and what may happen if you choose to wait. We aim to give you clear information so you can make decisions at your own pace, there's no pressure.
- 7
Follow-up scheduling
Before you leave, we'll discuss follow-up, whether that's a recall appointment in six months, a treatment appointment, or something in between. We'll schedule a time that works for you.
Your information is private
Patient health information collected at Wildwood Dental Clinic is handled in accordance with Saskatchewan's privacy legislation and PIPEDA. Your health records are confidential, stored securely, and used only for the purpose of providing your dental care. We do not share your information without your consent except as required by law.
After your first visit
Once your first visit is complete, you'll be part of our recall system. We'll contact you when you're due for your next checkup, typically every six months for most patients, though this interval may vary based on your individual needs and your dentist's recommendations.
If any follow-up treatment was recommended at your first visit, our team will help you schedule those appointments and answer any questions you have in the meantime. You're also welcome to call us at any time with questions.
