Sedation Dentistry

Dental anxiety is common, and it's a legitimate barrier to care for many people. Sedation options can make dental appointments more manageable for patients who find them stressful.

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry refers to the use of medication to help patients feel relaxed during dental procedures. The goal is not to eliminate sensation, local anesthetic is still used to prevent discomfort, but to reduce the anxiety and tension that can make dental care difficult for some patients.

It is important to understand that sedation at this clinic does not mean general anesthesia. Patients receiving sedation remain conscious and are able to respond to questions and instructions. The experience is one of calm relaxation rather than being "put under."

Who might benefit from sedation?

Sedation is not only for patients with severe anxiety. It may be appropriate for:

  • Patients with moderate to significant dental anxiety
  • Those with a strong or sensitive gag reflex that makes certain procedures difficult
  • Patients who find it hard to get adequately numb from local anesthetic alone
  • Those undergoing longer or more complex procedures where a relaxed state improves the experience
  • Children who have difficulty cooperating with dental care (nitrous oxide)
  • Patients with sensory sensitivities or special healthcare needs

Sedation options available

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small mask placed over the nose. It takes effect within a few minutes, producing a feeling of relaxation and mild euphoria. The patient remains fully conscious and able to communicate throughout the procedure.

One of the main advantages of nitrous oxide is how quickly it wears off once the mask is removed. Most patients can drive themselves home and return to normal activity shortly after their appointment. It is safe for children and adults.

  • Takes effect quickly, within minutes
  • Wears off rapidly after mask removal
  • Patient remains conscious and responsive
  • Safe for children and adults
  • No driver required in most cases

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed medication before the appointment. The medication produces a deeper state of relaxation than nitrous oxide, patients typically feel drowsy and may have little or no memory of the procedure afterward, though they remain conscious and able to respond.

Because the medication's effects last for some time after the procedure, patients who receive oral sedation must have a designated driver to take them home and should not drive, operate machinery, or make important decisions for the remainder of the day.

  • Deeper relaxation than nitrous oxide
  • Patient remains conscious and responsive
  • May have limited memory of the procedure
  • Requires a designated driver
  • Effects last several hours after the appointment

Important things to know

  • Sedation is not general anesthesia

Patients remain awake and can respond to instructions throughout. Local anesthetic is still administered to manage any discomfort during the procedure itself.

  • Health history matters

Sedation options are discussed in the context of your overall health. Certain medications and health conditions may affect which option is appropriate. A thorough health history review is part of the consultation process.

  • Consultation before sedation

If you are interested in sedation for an upcoming procedure, let us know when booking. We will discuss the options, what to expect, and any preparation required at your consultation.
