Dental Sealants
A quick, painless protective layer for back teeth, particularly useful for children, though adults can benefit too.
What are dental sealants?
Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, the molars and premolars. These surfaces are particularly prone to decay because they contain deep grooves and pits where food particles and bacteria can collect, even with regular brushing.
Sealants work by filling in those grooves to create a smooth surface that's easier to clean. The material bonds directly to the tooth enamel and acts as a physical barrier against the bacteria and acids that cause cavities.
Who can benefit from sealants?
Sealants are most commonly applied to children's permanent molars, typically as they come in between ages 6 and 12. Getting sealants early, before decay has a chance to develop, is a practical way to protect newly erupted teeth during the years when cavity risk tends to be higher.
That said, sealants are not limited to children. Adults who have deep grooves in their back teeth and no existing decay or large fillings in those areas may also be good candidates. Our team will assess your individual situation and let you know whether sealants make sense for you.
What does the procedure involve?
Applying sealants is a straightforward, painless process that requires no drilling or removal of tooth structure. The tooth is cleaned and dried, a mild conditioning solution is applied to help the sealant bond securely, and the sealant material is then painted onto the chewing surface. A curing light is used to harden the material in place.
The entire process for each tooth takes only a few minutes. There is no recovery time, and you can eat and drink normally as soon as the appointment is complete.
How long do sealants last?
With proper care, sealants can last several years. We check the condition of existing sealants at each recall visit and can reapply them if they show signs of wear or chipping.
Sealants do not replace regular brushing, flossing, or dental visits, they work best as part of a complete preventive routine. They protect the chewing surfaces, but the sides and spaces between teeth still need to be cleaned carefully each day.
