Dental Implants

A dental implant replaces a missing tooth at the root level, providing a stable foundation for a natural-looking crown. It is the option that most closely resembles a natural tooth in both appearance and function.

Oral surgery procedures at Wildwood Dental Clinic are performed by our general dentist team. Our dentists are not licensed specialists in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a small titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root. Once the implant integrates with the bone, a process called osseointegration, a small connector piece (the abutment) is attached, and a custom crown is placed on top.

The result is a restoration that looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth. Unlike a bridge, an implant does not require altering the adjacent teeth. Unlike a removable denture, an implant is fixed in place and does not shift during eating or speaking.

Implants can also serve as anchors for bridges or implant-supported dentures when multiple teeth need to be replaced.

Who are dental implants suitable for?

Implants may be suitable for patients who have lost one or more teeth due to decay, injury, or gum disease. Good general and oral health, adequate jawbone density to support the implant, and healthy gums are important factors.

Certain medical conditions or medications can affect healing and integration. A thorough consultation and assessment, including imaging to evaluate bone volume, is required to determine whether implants are appropriate for your situation.

The implant procedure

Dental implant treatment takes place in stages over several months:

  1. Surgical placement

The titanium implant post is placed into the jawbone under local anesthetic. The site is then closed and left to heal.

  2. Osseointegration

Over the following months, the bone gradually fuses with the implant surface. This integration period is essential for creating a stable foundation, it typically takes three to six months, though this varies by individual.

  3. Abutment placement

Once the implant has integrated, the abutment, the small connector piece, is attached to the implant post. The gum tissue is allowed to heal around it.

  4. Crown fitting

A custom-made crown is fabricated to match your surrounding teeth. It is then secured to the abutment, completing the restoration.

Benefits of dental implants

  • Helps prevent bone loss at the site of the missing tooth, the implant stimulates the jawbone the way a natural root would
  • Does not require altering adjacent teeth, unlike a traditional bridge
  • Fixed in place, no removal required, no adhesives needed
  • Closely resembles a natural tooth in appearance and bite function
  • Can support a crown, bridge, or denture depending on your needs

What to expect after surgery

The implant placement procedure is performed under local anesthetic, so the area is numb during surgery. Some swelling, mild tenderness, and minor bruising in the days following placement are a normal part of the healing response. Most patients manage any discomfort with over-the-counter pain relievers as recommended.

Following your dentist's post-operative instructions, including dietary guidance and oral hygiene recommendations, supports proper healing during the osseointegration period.

Caring for your implant

One of the advantages of dental implants is that they are cared for much like natural teeth. Brush twice daily, floss daily around the implant site, and attend regular checkups and cleanings. Your dentist will monitor the implant, the crown, and the surrounding gum and bone tissue at each visit.
