Sports Guards
A custom-fitted mouthguard is one of the simplest protective measures available for athletes. It fits precisely over your teeth and is far more comfortable and effective than generic over-the-counter options.
Why wear a sports mouthguard?
Dental injuries are among the most common injuries in contact and collision sports. A blow to the face during a game or practice can result in chipped or broken teeth, knocked-out teeth, cuts to the lips and tongue, and jaw injuries, some of which require significant restorative treatment to address.
A properly fitted mouthguard acts as a cushion that absorbs and disperses the force of an impact, protecting the teeth, lips, cheeks, and jaw. It can significantly reduce the risk of dental injury during sport.
Who should wear a mouthguard?
Mouthguards are recommended for anyone participating in contact or collision sports, regardless of age or skill level. This includes, but is not limited to:
Children and adults alike benefit from consistent use. Children's growing jaws may require updated guards periodically as their teeth and jaw develop.
Custom guards vs. over-the-counter options
Custom-fitted (dental office)
- Fabricated from impressions of your teeth for a precise fit
- More comfortable, fits snugly without needing to clench to hold in place
- Allows natural breathing and speech during activity
- More durable material than stock or boil-and-bite options
- Better protection due to even coverage and proper thickness
Over-the-counter (boil-and-bite or stock)
- Approximate fit, may shift during contact
- Often bulky and uncomfortable, reducing compliance
- Can interfere with breathing and communication
- Less durable; may need more frequent replacement
- Reduced effectiveness due to imprecise fit
What's involved in getting a custom guard?
The process is straightforward and typically requires just one appointment:
-
Impressions
Dental impressions are taken of your upper and lower teeth. These capture the precise shape and position of your teeth.
-
Fabrication
The impressions are used to create a custom-fitted guard from durable dental-grade material. The guard is fabricated to the appropriate thickness for your sport and jaw.
-
Fitting and adjustments
When your guard is ready, you try it in and we confirm the fit. Minor adjustments can be made to ensure it sits comfortably and securely.
Caring for your mouthguard
- Rinse your guard with cool water immediately after use.
- Clean it periodically with a toothbrush and mild soap, avoid hot water, which can warp the material.
- Store it in a firm, ventilated case when not in use.
- Bring it to your dental appointments so it can be inspected and any wear assessed.
- Replace it if it becomes torn, develops holes, or no longer fits well.
