Cleanings & Check-ups

A routine cleaning and exam is one of the most important things you can do for your long-term oral health. We make every visit thorough, comfortable, and informative.

What's included in a routine exam and cleaning?

A routine dental visit at Wildwood involves both a professional cleaning by our hygienist and a thorough exam by the dentist. Together, these give us a complete picture of your oral health.

Professional scaling removes the plaque and tartar that accumulate on your teeth over time, particularly in areas that are difficult to clean with a toothbrush or floss. Even with excellent home care, mineral deposits can build up along the gumline and between teeth.

Polishing follows scaling to smooth the tooth surfaces and remove light staining, leaving teeth clean and fresh.

The dental exam covers an assessment of each tooth for signs of decay, wear, or cracking; a review of your gums and supporting bone; a bite evaluation; and an oral cancer screening. The dentist will discuss any findings with you and explain your options if any follow-up is recommended.

X-rays are taken when due, based on your individual history. They allow us to detect decay between teeth and monitor bone levels, areas we cannot see during a visual exam alone.

Before you leave, your hygienist will offer personalised home-care advice tailored to your oral health, whether that's brushing technique, flossing, or guidance on specific products.

How often should I come in?

For most patients, a cleaning and check-up every six months is a good baseline. This interval allows our team to monitor changes over time and address anything early.

Some patients, particularly those with a history of gum disease, higher cavity risk, or certain systemic health conditions, may benefit from more frequent appointments. Your hygienist and dentist will recommend a recall schedule based on your specific needs, and that recommendation may change over time as your oral health evolves.

What to expect at your visit

  1. 1

    Check-in and health history review

We update your medical and dental history at each visit. Changes in medications, health conditions, or concerns since your last appointment help us provide safer, more personalised care.

  2. 2

    X-rays if due

Digital x-rays are taken based on your history and risk level. They use significantly less radiation than older film-based systems and are reviewed by the dentist during your exam.

  3. 3

    Professional cleaning by the hygienist

Your hygienist performs scaling to remove tartar, followed by polishing. They'll also floss between your teeth and review any areas that may need extra attention at home.

  4. 4

    Exam by the dentist

The dentist examines your teeth, gums, bite, and oral tissues. They review your x-rays and discuss any findings with you in clear, straightforward terms.

  5. 5

    Treatment recommendations if needed

If any concerns are identified, the dentist will explain the options, including what happens if you wait. There's no pressure; our goal is to help you make informed decisions.

  6. 6

    Recall appointment scheduled

Before you leave, we'll book your next appointment at the interval recommended for you, so your care stays on track.

Note for new patients

Your first visit at Wildwood may take a little longer than subsequent appointments. We take time to establish baseline records, including a full set of x-rays if you don't have recent ones, so we have a complete picture of your oral health from day one. This investment upfront means future visits can be more focused and efficient.
